i. Soil liquefaction hazard map development in Taiwan

The Department of Civil Engineering, Vardhaman College of Engineering organized an International Guest Lecture dated 16th October 2020 by online. This session was organized to celebrate the birth anniversary (October 15th) of renowned scientist and ‘Missile Man of India’ Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s. The main objective of this program is to bring practicing engineers to share their ideas and experiences with the students in the field of civil engineering. This program is helpful for the students to understand about liquefaction mechanism and its preventive measures. Earthquakes cause number of disturbances in the ground which can harm or damage the structural stability which could turn fatal. It may trigger a rapid movement change that is out of step with the rest of the system, resulting in many structural losses to the property contributing to casualties. The Government of India has paid serious attention to carry out the detailed site investigation related to earthquakes after the devastating earth-quake of Gujarat in the year 2001. This research deals with safe construction practices to avoid the loss from the future earthquakes. The guest speaker, Prof. Lu, Chih-Wei delivered a lecture on topic ‘soil liquefaction hazard map development in Taiwan’. Prof. Lu explained several case studies of liquefaction induced disasters, and its mitigations. He discussed about laboratory of soil dynamics and advanced geotechnical disaster mitigation, in that he explained about theoretical studies, case studies, applications, laboratory tests, geotechnical centrifuge tests, ground improvement, seismic designs and innovations. He explained all details about soil liquefaction hazard map development in Taiwan city and these mapping will help for future safety in civil engineering constructions. Lot of questions came up during the session because of the limited knowledge of students in the practical point of view. Prof. Lu was very patient and humble in answering the queries of students and outside participants. Students were really enthusiastic to know in depth of the liquefaction phenomena. There were around 200 participants from various institutions who had shown their immense interest on the session and also interacted with the presenter and asked many queries which were happily answered and clarified by him. The students and faculty thoroughly enjoyed the session. Hope our India-Taiwan national flags can be more related to each other because of this sort of session. This webinar could help to improve the research relationship between our two countries, India and Taiwan. The session coordinator Dr. Bogireddy Chandra extended his thanks to Prof. Dr. Chandresh Solanki, SVNIT Surat and Dr. Ankit Garg, Shantou University China, for their kind support and great interaction at beginning with Prof. Lu. Finally, Dr. G. Mallikarjuna Rao, HOD, Department of Civil Engineering, VCE, expressed his special thanks to the guest speaker. Dr. Bogireddy Chandra and Dr. Dharmesh Lal, coordinators of the International Guest Lecture, shared their special gratitude and a vote of thanks for the session.

(i) Guest Lecture on “Raising awareness of consultancy in Civil Engineering” By Dr. Darga Kumar

The Department of Civil Engineering of Vardhaman College of Engineering organized a Guest Lecture on “Raising awareness of consultancy in Civil Engineering” under Indian Geotechnical Society Vardhaman college of Engineering (IGS Vardhaman) Student Chapter on 30th November, 2018 from 10 AM to 12 PM. The main objective of the program was to bring eminent professors from recognized institutions to share their knowledge and expertise. The program helped the students to gain knowledge of the practical aspects that occurs during construction of various engineering structures. The speaker for the technical talk on “Raising awareness of consultancy in Civil Engineering”. was Dr. Darga Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, JNTU, Hyderabad.
The event proved to be grand success because of the active participation of the students. Guest Lecture is a way of enriching students with the latest technology and developments from expert knowledge of speakers who have vast skills and expertise in the area beyond curriculum. In addition, a good interaction took place between the speaker and participants. Further, the Civil Engineering Department had an opportunity to explore the possibilities of collaboration with the speaker with respect to internships and consultancy.
