Bureau of Indian standards (BIS)

The Erstwhile Indian Standards Institution (now Bureau of Indian Standards) was established in the year 1947 with the objective of harmonious development of standardization activity in India. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) was established under the BIS Act, 1986 for the harmonious development of the activities of standardization, marking and quality certification of goods and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. A new Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 which was notified on 22nd March 2016, has been brought into force with effect from 12 October 2017 that reinforces the activities of BIS in respect to standardization and certification of goods, articles, processes, systems and services.

Educational Utilization Indian Standard program jointly organized by Department of Civil Engineering and BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards)

In the engineering courses, students do refer to various Indian standards pertaining to their subjects. Therefore, as desired by the Government of India, BIS is conducting Educational Utilization programs periodically. In the Bureau of Indian Standards, Standardization activity is carried out fewer than 15technical Departments but for now only for Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Civil Engineering. Around 20,454 Indian Standards are published by these 15 technical departments of BIS. During our Educational Utilization program, some of the important standards are brought to the notice of the students of various branches for their own benefit in their future job in respective industries and also incase if they are interested in establishing their own industries

(xx) One-day Workshop on “Concrete Mix Design”

Date: Wednesday, March 11, 2020

Time: 10:00 am to 5:30 pm

Venue: 1009 Fourth Block-I & Concrete Technology Lab

Speaker: Chairman ICI Telangana Chapter & team of experts from Ultratech Cement.

Faculty Co-ordinator: Dr. Mallikarjuna Rao, Dr. Pankaj Mali and Dr. M. Venu

Audience: UG and PG students of Civil Engineering from all over Hyderabad.

Concrete is one of the most important, challenging and having ocean of scope to explore for any civil engineering student. The ultimate goal in studying the theoretical background of the subject is to design the optimum concrete mix.

It has been noticed that the topic of concrete mix design needs special attention especially the practical understanding. This practical aspect of mix design most probably is not handled properly during the conventional academic curriculum (Classroom theory teaching).

To address this above issue is a real challenge in front of all concerned faculty. Understanding the need and importance of this topic, faculty of department of civil engineering of VCE have come up with the idea where students will be exposed to the theoretical procedure of concrete mix design and simultaneously they will actually cast and test the concrete cubes to verify the accuracy of their theoretical calculations.

Initially it was thought of conducting this session for the civil engineering students of VCE only. However, with the efforts of our head of department we could manage to get sponsors from Ultratech as well as ICI. This motivated us to extend the same event outside VCE and it was decided to invite UG (Civil Engineering) students from local colleges Hyderabad. And to our surprise in the first attempt of organizing such kind of workshop we received overwhelming response from other colleges of Hyderabad.

Finally, it was decided to conduct a one-day workshop on concrete mix design which is going to address the IS code procedure as well as practical application of the same. Department of civil engineering along with the support of Ultratech and ICI Hyderabad chapter has executed this one-day workshop at Vardhaman college of Engineering.

The complete workshop was a combination of three sessions. In the first session all the participants were exposed to the detailed methodology of concrete mix proportioning by the team of experts from Ultratech. After this the students were grouped into batches (College wise) total ten batches were formed. All batches were given a common mix design problem and they were asked to design the concrete mix of M30 grade within 60 minutes of time.

First session of the Workshop (Presentation given by Ultratech people)

In the second session of the workshop all the participants were taken to concrete lab where they were allowed to cast three concrete cubes as per their proportions. All batches were provided with necessary resources of materials and equipment’s.

Second Session of the workshop whre participants are casting concrete cube in CT Lab.

Concrete cube casted in second stage will be tested for seven days strength. In the third session the chief guest Srinivas Reddy sir and the four members from Ultratech were felicitated with memento by faculty coordinators.  At last the students who were involved in all three sessions of this workshop were given participation certificates by the guest of honor. After seven days of curing period the concrete cube specimens were tested for the average compressive strength. Based on the actual cube strength obtained and the mix design calculations submitted by each batch the winner is decided. The maximum compressive strength was found in batch no 2 from Vardhaman college only.

Third session of the Workshop (Felicitation of guest by faculty coordinators)

As per student’s feedback, it was a unique and informative workshop. Students attended the workshop with maximum attendance.

(xxi)  Educational field visit to Miralam water treatment plant, Asif nagar, Hyderabad

Vardhaman College, Civil Engineering Department has organized one-day Educational Field Visit to “Mir Alam Water Treatment Plant, Asif Nagar, Hyderabad” on 12-03-2020. Field visit permission obtained from Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB). A total of 66 students of third year civil engineering along with four assistant professors, Durgasrilakshmi Hari, V. Renuka, S. Raghu and Dr. Dharmesh Lal Visited the Mir Alam Tank Filter Beds. Water is being drawn from the source Himayatsagar using pumps as the level is so low that it can’t be pulled with the help of gravity, that supplies water to Asif Nagar and Mir Alam filter beds. From here, the treated water is supplied to Old City. The total capacity of the treatment plant is about 18MGD.

The Plant works on Rapid Sand filtration. It has the following main connected units:

  • Intake Wells
  • Sedimentation Tank
  • Coagulation unit
  • Rapid Sand Filter
  • Chlorination
  • Storage sump.

There are 36 hopper bottom Sedimentation Tanks having 3 hours retention period and 10 Rapid Sand having filtration capacity of 1.8 MG per bed are in use. For Disinfection Chlorine gas is being used. The treated water is stored in an underground sump from which it is being pumped to the neighboring Old City areas. The total units of treatment plant were explained by the technical supervisor in detail. The process of back wash of the Rapid Sand Filter is explained and demonstrated practically.
